6. Luzhniki Stadium (Russia) – 81,000
The Luzhniki Stadium is located in Moscow, near the Moskva river. The stadium is owned by the Russian government, and has a seating capacity of 81,000. Luzhniki in Russian means “Meadows.”
The stadium was built in 1956 and was the home ground for football clubs like CSKA Moscow, Turpedo Moscow, and Spartak Moscow. But today, it is only used for the international football matches of Russia. The stadium also witnessed the worst sporting disaster in Russia, which saw people stumbled over one another at the lower steps of the stairway. Sixty-six people died in the incident.
The pitch is modulated to withstand the harsh winters, and hosted the 2008 Champions League final between Manchester United and Chelsea which the former won in penalty shootout.
